Shoup stands out for Bruins in loss to Norwell
Blackford’s boys swim team competed in their regular season finale Tuesday, January 31, and senior Matt Shoup made the most of being in the BHS pool for the last time. Norwell won the meet by a score of 116-41, as the Bruins ended the year at 3-11.
Shoup had a huge night for the Bruins and earned accolades from his coach. Matt won the 200 and 500 freestyle races then swan the anchor leg for the first pkace 400 freestyle relay team.
Others on the relay team were Greg Shoup, Brent Miholland, and MacGahey.
Milholland finished second in the 50 and 100 freestyle races during the meet.
The boys semi-finals will be in two weeks at Jay County on February 16.
Lady Bruins draw bye
in sectional
Blackford’s girls drew the bye during Sunday’s Indiana High School Athletic Association state tournament draw. The Class 3A Yorktown Sectional 24 will open Tuesday, February 7th at 6 p.m. with Delta (13-5) taking on Muncie South (7-12) while Yorktown (8-10) will face #5 Hamilton Heights (17-4). On Thursday, February 9th, Muncie Central (1-18) will face the Delta-South winner while the Lady Bruins (8-11) take on the Hamilton Heights-Yorktown winner at 7:30 p.m.
First-year Tom Lindsey pointed out the positives and negatives of drawing the bye.
“We got the bye so you get one game off and you are only one game away from the championship,” Lindsey said. “But you also hope nerves don’t come into play because it will be your first game and their second. So there is good and bad. The draw is what it is. You know you have to face good teams sooner or later.”
Hamilton Heights will be considered the favorite by many, as they Huskies boast one of the top scorers in the state in junior Dakota Weatherford. She is fourth in the state in scoring with a 23.1 average, shooting 51 percent from the field, 35 percent from beyond the arc, and 75 percent at the line. She has scored 28+ points in eight of the Huskies 21 games, has four 30+ plus games, and one game she hit 41. Weatherford also average six rebounds and seven steals a game so she is setting herself up to be a Miss Basketball candidate a year from now.         The Huskies are a young team as well with four juniors and two sophomores as their top players. Two sophomores, Haley Lock and Kiley waters, average 12.7 and 9.4, respectively.
“Hamilton Heights is probably the favorite, they are ranked fifth in the state and should be. Delta is right there as well as one of the top two teams. But that doesn’t discount us because it is sectional and anything can happen. Our girls will step up to any challenge and try to get a win,” Lindsey said. “If Hamilton Heights is who we play it will be a tall test for us, but one our coaching staff and team will be happy to accept.”
Delta has a good one-two punch in Kasin Spay, who averages 17.1 a game, and Alicia Farmer with a 15.7 scoring clip.         Adding to the excitement of the post-season already are a few side notes. Hamilton Heights coach Tom Windlan was at Delta as head coach a year ago, leading the Eagles to a 9-11 record. Delta’s head coach is Marty Daniel, the former Blackford Athletic Director, and Eagle assistant coach Bruce Ruble was the head coach at BHS a year ago.
Other points of interest include: Host Yorktown is the defending champion of the sectional; Delta has not won a sectional title since the 1992-93 season; Muncie Central is playing the Class 3A for the first time in school history; and Muncie South who has seven wins and beat Central for the first time ever this year and is looking for their first 8-win season in five years.

Bruin state scoring record broken
A state scoring record was set back in 1991 when Blackford defeated Wabash in overtime, 124-122. It marked the most points ever in a game as the two conference foes combined for 246 points. Memorabilia from the game, including the game ball, was sent to the Indiana High School Basketball Hall of Fame in New Castle to be put on display.

That 20-year old record was broken last weekend and Wabash was once again involved. The Apaches defeated Southwood, 126-123, in triple overtime.

The two teams now top the all-time list of every basketball game ever played in high school in Indiana in four categories: combined points, points scored in a losing effort, points scored in overtime and combined points in overtime, according to several sources.

That was the year the Bruins put a high-flying, high-scoring offense out and produced numerous 100 point games early in the season and led the state in offensive average. That night 1991 BHS grad Ryan Taylor also set the single-game scoring record for BHS at the time with 47 points.

A member of that team also and part of that record-setting night is current Bruin coach and 1991 graduate Dave Marshall.

“246 points in that game was a lot. That’s a record I didn’t think would ever be broken. But it stood for 20 years,” Marshall said on learning of the news. “It was an exciting game and I was glad to be a part of it. I’m sure the Wabash and Southwood kids are as excited as we all were.“

Wabash has been involved in four of the top 10 games for most combined points, and the Central Indiana Conference has been represented in four of the top 10.

An interesting fact was the scorekeeper for Wabash was the same one who kept book and watched the record set 20 years ago in Blackford’s gymnasium.
